PARTNERS: Maplewood, NJ

Maplewood Town Hall Maplewood NJ just launched a kick-off community meeting event to address climate change. The purpose of the community meeting was to understand the township’s greenhouse gas impact and set community-wide reduction targets.

Maplewood began this initiative in the 1990’s when the township joined ICLEI and began an inventory of all greenhouse gas emissions. In 2006, Maplewood became a Clean Air Cool Planet partner with the intention to begin a multi-year effort to cut costs and curtail emissions responsible for global warming and air pollution through a program of energy efficiency, technology, and conservation. Clean Air-Cool Planet has been able to provide this technical assistance and guidance through funding from PSEG.

Robert McCoy, Chair of the Maplewood Environmental Advisory Committee of the township, committee completed the greenhouse gas inventory for the township. This presentation illustrates key findings of the inventory.

A student intern, Gina Mongiello, was hired by Clean Air Cool Planet to aid the township through the next phase in order to create to the action plan.

The community meeting was extremely successful with approximately 90 residents in attendance. Also present were: Clean Air-Cool Planet, NJ Department of Environmental Protection, GreenFaith, Whole Market Foods, Effective Energy Solutions, and PSEG.

Young students were also present at the community meeting. The Youth Social Action Committee demonstrated how water power works in a display in front of the town hall. The Youth Social Action Committee, created in the fall of 2006, is a group of local elementary school kids and their parents working together to address global warming and water issues to the residents of Maplewood.

Maplewood will now begin to take the recommendations from the community event to begin the creation of a draft Action Plan.

Gina will begin making presentations to different groups in the township.
